We had such a fun 4th of July... so random, but one of the best days yet!!! We started off with cloudy skies.. so that cancelled our plans to be at the Tennis Club all day. So we decided to go to Huntington Beach. We stopped off at the Shake Shack and had lunch under cloudy, over-cast skies. Amazing views though. The kids enjoyed the beach side seats we scored.
Then we headed to The Huntington Beach Fair. But... the traffic was SO backed up, we were just sitting there. Boys were getting impatient, Mela was crying.. Eric was getting frustrated. So we turned around and went home.
By the time we got back to our house the sun was shining and it was so hot! (hot for Ca.) So we pulled out of sprinkler and a few golf balls and had at it.
Madalyn and her family invited us over to a very last minute BBQ. The kids played Baseball, ate hotdogs we got to chat about their big trip to OHIO and Mela had fun crawling all over the yard getting her little hands on anything that she could, especially the water mellon.
We came home, changed the kids into their PJ's and headed to PV to go see the fireworks.. Why not? This was never in our plan.. but WHY NOT?!!!
It's been over 6 years since we went to go "See" fireworks. It was a BLAST!!! WE ate hamburgers, played games, told stories, colored, played in out sticker books all in the back of the SUV packed with blankets and pillows. The boys got to run around the baseball fields. We waited from 6:45p-9;30p and we thought had a great parking spot. We stayed right in our car at the top of the hill on Malaga Cove. Amazing views. We were waiting, waiting.. waiting. The kids were SO EXCITED. Mela fell asleep.
As we got ourselves situated as 9p approached. The boys were standing up looking out the sun-roof, then they would switch to the front seat wrapping themselves in blankets.. We casually saw people walking back towards us around 9:20p. Then we would see a line of cars coming towards us.
I wanted to cry. I said to Eric, " I think we missed the fireworks" maybe this was a bad spot.. I stuck my head out of the window and was asking some people.. where's the fireworks. as they said, "That was it" They are over" OMG... What in the world, we missed it? Is this a joke? these people thought I was crazy.
We thought quickly and told the boys that maybe it was too cloudy that's why the fireworks never went off.. As we buckled them back into their seats.. their little faces hanging so low.. Eric turned the car around and we started to follow the lines of traffic. I seriously wanted to cry.. no really I was going to cry! The boys were going to cry!!!
Here we thought we would just go for it-who cares how late or what's on the agenda for the next day... who cares if everyone is tired and crabby let's just go and wait on fireworks. We've never gone before-To think we just hung out and waited for almost 3 hrs. in what we thought was front row seats in the comfort of our own car and for all that.. we missed it.
And we had some very disappointed little boys in the back seat.. As we were stuck in line trying to turn left to go back home.. we see in the rear view mirror some flashing lights.. I looked back and said.. "ERIC TURN AROUND"!! He did.. He practically stopped traffic did a "U" turn in the middle of all the chaos and speed thru to try and get our spot back. We lost our spot that we had secured for 3 hrs. We ended up stopping in the middle of the road, the boys popped off their seat belts and I pulled them up front with me to watch and amazing firework show. Their little faces gleamed... it was such a magical moment. I grabbed the blanket wrapped them up in my arms and we sat there in the middle of the road. WE didn't care that people couldn't get around us. Luckily some guy decided to leave on the side of the road and we slid right into his spot.. Even better than the 3hr. spot we were keeping busy in earlier.. Austin and Kain were so excited. They were holding hands loving every moment. Mela even work up and we rolled down her window. She never made a little peep!
This was the best night ever. The Grand finale went off and we got everyone settle back into their seats. And we went home. Kain fell asleep and Austin's smile was from cheek to cheek.
We think what happened is that the people we were asking saw fireworks from Redondo Beach because they were sitting much lower than us.. We thought because everyone was walking back that we were just in a totally bad spot and missed it all. AND it was almost 9:40p before they even started. Who starts fireworks that late? It was dark by 8:15.
Needless to say... This will now be our tradition every year. ... pack the car, bring the food, games, blankets, camera and kids and camp out in our perfect little spot and wait till well past 9:30 for the fireworks!
The boys were still talking about it today. What an adventure.. That's us.. That's our life.. ONE BIG ADVENTURE!
HA HA, I bought some "fireworks" for the kids to play with. Those "poppers" were a big hit!
Waiting.....
Playing "ZINGO"
Running the bases on the baseball field.....
Waiting.....
Sun is setting....
The line up of cars parked along the street.
Sun is almost down....
Almost time...
YAH.... WORTH THE WAIT!
Making memories... that's what it's all about! We will never forget this day!
